A Place to Create, Perform, and Belong
Beacon Hill Middle School’s Theatre program is a vibrant and inclusive environment where students explore the world of performing arts while building essential skills in acting, musical theatre, and technical theatre. Designed to inspire creativity, teamwork, and confidence, this program offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of theatre production, both on stage and behind the scenes.
The program stages two major productions each year. The Fall Musical - held at the DHS Performing Arts Center- integrates singing, dancing, acting, and technical production. The Spring Play - held at the BHMS Cafeteria stage - focuses on acting, storytelling, and opportunities for backstage crew experience. These performances give students the opportunity to apply their skills in a live setting, fostering collaboration and discipline.
Performances
This component combines singing, acting, and movement to help students understand the unique demands of musical theatre. The program focuses on vocal technique, choreography, and blending performance styles.
Introduction to Musical Theatre
Students learn key acting techniques, including character development, voice projection, and improvisation. Activities include scene work, monologues, and ensemble-building exercises to enhance their confidence and stage presence.
Foundations in Acting
Students explore the essential elements of behind-the-scenes production, including lighting, sound, set design, and costume creation. Hands-on experience with technical equipment and stage management during performances ensures a well-rounded understanding of theatre production.
Technical Theatre Skills
Whitley (Fowler) Green, Director
Mrs. Green holds a Masters in Theatre Education from Columbus State University. She has worked in the primary/secondary education industry since 2018, and has taught at Beacon Hill Middle School since 2024. She brings with her skills in Theatre, Film Production, Stage Management, and Television. Her teaching accolades include the Beaverbrook Elementary Teacher of the Year Award (2023-2024).
When she is not busy with school activities, Whitley and her husband enjoy traveling, attending live performances, and exploring all that Atlanta has to offer.
